A statue dedicated to General Gouverneur Kemble Warren, then chief engineer of the Army of the Potomac stands on Little Round Top as tourists take in the view of the valley below. Warren is credited with spotting Confederate General Hood's flanking movements toward Little Round Top and taking action which saved the key position. Devil's Den was used by Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Sickles and the part of his Third Corps to slow the advancement of Confederate troops, however it was captured on July 2, the second day of the battle. It was then used by Southern sniper and sharpshooters to keep Union soldiers on Little Round top under fire.
